Goodbye August, Hello September!

The honest truth is that I feel guilty admitting this, but I am so glad that August is over.

I'm just so much lighter now that September is here. I'm no longer focused on every detail of two years ago. And oh God, two years. But once August is over I can begin to think about over things. I can pour myself into my weight loss goals, catch up on all the household cleaning that I've neglected over the last month, rearrange the living room furniture, watch my shows on tv, work on my crochet blanket that I put off, and stay up late reading. Ok...so when you lay it all out like that, maybe I am trying to distract myself.

I hadn't fully realized how far I had let myself sink until we were moving furniture this afternoon. Seeing how filthy our living room had gotten, I can't even tell you how much cereal I found behind and under the couch. I was appalled. I feel like every August my life just gets put on hold while I barely function.

You know what? That's ok. It's ok to allow myself to grieve. So what if the house gets messy? As long as Meghan is taken care of, that's all that matters right? Even so, it does feel good to get back on track. Every bit of dust I wipe away feels cleansing. Workout pulses new energy and life into my blood. It feels good.

I just wish a little bit of happiness didn't make me feel so rottenly guilty.

Barely Functioning

I'm barely functioning right now. I think August is just a black hole for me. I guess the whole kidney thing and then an increase of my Lyrica didn't help matters. But the brain fog is pretty bad. Without looking, I couldn't tell you what day of the month this is. I'm not blacking out, but I swear the day jumps around with large amounts of time wasted. I am just so tired. And yes, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I'm sure you're tired of hearing about it too. No one likes a whiner. I'm just frustrated that I cannot think straight. My house is a gross wreck right now because I just don't have the energy to clean. Thankfully, we have no plans for the weekend and we can try to catch up. I just feel like I need someone to tell me step by step what needs to be done.

I'm over my "I hate you all" anger. Once again, it's just my way of coping right now. It's not fair to all of you or really even to myself. Hopefully with time I'll find a better way to cope. For now though, I'm over it. I'm still avoiding Facebook for a few days to steer around the triggers.

In other news, I have started a separate blog for my weight loss stuff. I know you all voted for me to keep it all over here, but now that I'm getting a little more serious, I feel that it needs it's own space. I will link the two together and make references to that blog here when I have a new post. You can also subscribe to any of my blogs to be notified of news posts. I hope you'll continue to follow me in both places. I will be working on being more active and finding ways to make it easier to follow. Hang in there with me and please if you have any suggestions or request, let me know.

Without further ado, here is my new blog for my weight loss and health stuff, Healing Graces. Visit, comment, subscribe! I've moved my old weight loss stuff over and post the results of my final weigh in!

I hate you all

Today is one of those days where I just want to hate all of you. I don't really, it's just my way of placing my anger somewhere else and trying to cope with it. But today when so many of you have children starting or returning to school and my son would have been starting preschool too...well I hate you all.

When I see so many pregnancy posts or new babies when we have decided it's just too hard to have any more, I hate you all.

When I see you happy while I'm miserable, I hate you all.

When you offer a child for "sale hahaha" because they're annoying you, I want to run you over with my car repeatedly.

Tomorrow I'll like you again, but for this moment I hate you all and I can't help it.

Happy 4th Birthday Max

Happy Birthday Max. I miss you more each day. Today you would have been four years old and starting Preschool. I know you would have continued to be a great big brother and taught Meghan so much. You were so loving, fun, smart...you were mine.

Today we celebrated your birthday without you. I'm sure you had an amazing birthday in Heaven. We took Meghan to the beach. I could feel you there with us. I know you would have loved the ocean. We bought you a cake and let Meghan blow out the candles. And we thought about you...constantly.

I miss you.

Things Just Suck Right Now

After my last post about going to the ER with a kidney infection, I ended up getting worse and wound up being admitted to the hospital for a few days. I was released once my blood work came back clean, somewhat against doctor's orders. He wanted to keep me for an extra day but I was ready to come home to my own bed and my family. By that point, I was having a lot of muscle/fibro pain from staying in an uncomfortable hospital bed constantly. So I came home bruised, sick and weak. I've continued to improve a little each day. I finally have most of my strength back and am able to drive again. I am still tired and wear out much easier. Saturday was a busy, rushing around, on my feet day and by evening I was literally shaking because of the pain. I still have stones left, though I'm not sure how many. Therefore I also still have pain periodically on both sides.

If it weren't for getting ill, I would have finished the Face 2 Face program last week. Instead, I've been unable to exercise for over two weeks now. That's been upsetting for me. I felt like I had gotten into such a good routine. I am equally scared to go back and anxious to go back. I am certain that the kidney problems are related to my constant state of dehydration combined with my sudden increase in sweating from the sauna, steam room, and working out. If anything, I've now learned my lesson: I need to DRINK. I need to make my body priority and take care of myself better.

We're also leading up to "that time of the year". I honestly feel like we just did this. Last year I was so emotional and terrified of August 12th and 17th. I was afraid of Max's balloon release and all the emotions surrounding it. Afterwards, I took a deep breath and just felt relieved that I survived the anniversary. And now here we are again, so soon. The idea that I haven't seen my own son in TWO years just shatters my heart and is NOT FAIR. Because it's not, it's NOT FAIR AT ALL.  I have these friends that I know I can count on. BS will keep me distracted if I need it. SS sends me words of encouragement and allows me to talk about the hard stuff. CN has this way about her that makes it just all tumble out and she reads between the lines, calling me out on stuff. My therapist is beyond amazing and I couldn't be more thankful for her. I need them. But it's hard because sometimes if feels like no one else talks about it, no one talks about HIM. It's taboo. It's old news.

I'm just very glad that Robert is staying home next week.

Things just suck right now.

My Unexpected Trip

Yesterday was busy but nothing signaled that anything was wrong. Meghan and I went to the therapy, the gym (where I pushed myself harder than ever on the treadmill), grocery shopping and for a picnic lunch with Daddy. Then I met Beth for dinner and a movie. We had a great time and despite the busy-ness of my day, I felt pretty good.

I went to bed after I got home and despite having difficulty getting to sleep I drifted off around 11. At midnight, I rolled onto my stomach (I wasn't wearing my CPAP because of nasal allergies) and suddenly got a searing pain in my back on the lower left side. I figured it was a muscle cramp from doing weights the day before. I rolled onto my right side and tried massaging it myself but the pain increased. I couldn't get comfortable. The pain began to wrap around my side. At this point I was still trying to find a position that would ease the pain. Finally when it was clear that I wasn't going to get comfortable, I came downstairs.

I spent about two hours downstairs by myself because I didn't want to disturb Robert. But 30 minutes in, I knew something was wrong. It pain continued to worse, never relenting even for a second. I was freezing and shaking from the pain. I started to become afraid that I wouldn't be able to make it up the stairs to wake Robert and I knew that he wouldn't hear me scream. I wanted to go to the hospital, but being me...I didn't want to wake everyone, I didn't want to be a burden, I didn't want to be an expense. I figure I had given birth twice without drugs, I could wait it out until morning. But just in case, I crawled up the stairs and woke Robert. I explained that I didn't want to do anything about it, I just wanted him to be aware. I made him promise to go back to sleep and to get as much rest as possible.

I took two hydrocodone with hopes of being able to sleep. The pain still increase and by now I was writhing and groaning. 15 minutes after the pain pills I began vomiting. I'd spend 20 minutes in the bathroom and then 5 minutes trying to sleep. As time went on I was praying for relief and praying to make it until morning. I knew I needed to go to the hospital, but I didn't want to take Meghan in the middle of the night.

5 am came and I was crying. Two babies without drugs, wisdom teeth, ovarian cysts and tumors...I never cried from the pain. I started to beg Robert to take me, though I was afraid of the drive. Unable to walk easily, it took about an hour to get dressed, get Meghan up, pack her a breakfast, and make it to the hospital.

I was lucky that the waiting room was empty and they took me right back. Due to shift change and some miscommunication, my medications took a little over an hour to get to me. When they finally injected the two pain meds and Zofran (anti-nausea medication) into my IV, I felt so much better. It was almost instant. I was soooooo high and it was amazing to feel NO pain, not only the pain I was there for but the constant pain I usually have. I was set for a cat scan and then the next several hours were spent waiting for results.

During all of this, I was an emotional wreck. I've found that pain medications knock down my tough wall and I lose my normal inability to cry. I cried because I was grateful for Robert being there for me, I cried because I was scared, I cried because I missed Max, I cried because I loved Meghan so much, I cried because I was in the hospital that my Father and Grandfather died at, I cried because I was in a hospital and that reminded me of losing Max. I cried a lot.

Most heavily, I cried for my friend Mandi. Mandi had many of the same illness I do. We met through the online support group I formed as a teenager, Silly Sickies. Mandi was great friend, an amazing woman. At 27 she died from liver failure because of the medications she took...for the illnesses we share . I cried for her and cried because I was afraid.

Finally the doctor came with my results. I have multiple small stones on the right side and a bad infection in my left kidney (the source of the pain). She gave me the option of staying or trying to go home. She said most people with kidney infections that bad stay, but she wanted to give me the choice because of Meghan.

So here I am at home. I have a prescription for antibiotics, pain medication and Zofran. If the pain is intolerable or if I'm able to keep the medications down, I'm to come back to be admitted. I slept for several hours after returning home and now that I'm up the pain has returned. Luckily, so far (knock on wood), it's not as bad as it was last night and this morning. Robert has made me promise to tell him if it's bad and to agree to be admitted. He knows me too well.

Yesterday, my therapist gave me some printouts about asking for help. Obviously, an issue for me. Here's a good chance to work on that! We're ok for now, but I may end up calling a few friends for help with Meghan, especially if I end up admitted.

Now Hiring!

I had another kick butt day at the gym, this time doing intervals on the treadmill and AMT machine. Next week I will be having my nutrition appointment where I'll be bringing a log of everything I eat and drink over a three day period. One week from that I'll have my last appointment with my final  weight and measurements. I'm excited to see the changes in my body! Already, I'm feeling more energetic and a little stronger.

One area I am lacking in is a good support team. I need friends (near or far) I can count on over this long journey to help push and motivate me. I need YOU to hold me accountable.

Are you interested in joining my support team? Email me to find out how you can help!

Failure

“We seem to gain wisdom more readily through our failures than through our successes. We always think of failure as the antithesis of success, but it isn't. Success often lies just the other side of failure.”
Leo F. Buscaglia

I failed. I gave up. I wimped out.

You get used to it...No, you don't.

A few weeks ago, I was visiting with a group of friends when the conversation turned uncomfortable. First it was  how dangerous bath time can be, then a discussion of whether it's easier to have one kid or two, and finally talk of a little girl who had died a few months ago who was a classmate of a few of their kids. During all of this, I received a sympathetic glance from two of my closer friends. Once the visit was over, I walked out with one of my close friends. As soon as the door shut and we were out of ear shot of everyone else, my friend turned to me and asked if I was ok. "You get used to it." I replied with a sigh. "I don't know how you could ever get used to that." she said heavily. I paused for a minute before answering with a weak laugh, "No, you don't. You don't get used to it at all."

Chugging Along

Despite eating out a couple times last week, I'm feeling pretty good about my progress. I've been going to the gym regularly and trying out new things. I even tried Aqua Zumba which was a lot of fun! It was easier to keep up with than I thought it would be. I was actually disappointed when the time was up because I wanted to keep going!

Four Pounds

Today was my 2nd Face 2 Face appointment at the gym. Last week I was just weighed and measured, which was NOT fun. Especially when I had to argue with the girl about whether the bathroom scale they were using went high enough for me. Completely embarrassing.

Daddy Issues

Back in 2005 I had an assignment in my English course called "Snap Shot." We were to write an autobiographical essay in the form of little snap shots. This is my essay with a current update following.

Journey to a Healthy ME! - Day 1

We're going to call today "Day 1" even though I've been working on this a little longer than that. But the point being that today is my first official day blogging about it! So here goes!

The Bestest Heather

Those of you that are on my Facebook list have probably seen me talking about The Bestest Heather from time to time.

Maybe you've seen crazy pictures like this:

New Years Eve 2010
There's a story behind that, I promise!

Tested

I have insulted my own karma several times over the years. Those who have spent any amount of time with me can attest that I have often said really negative things about my own luck. I refer to myself as a having a crap storm constantly over my head, I'm a magnet for bad things, I'm Hitler reincarnated and thus receiving his karma...the list goes on and on.

Spin It

Yesterday on our way to pick Daddy up from work, the car broke down. Luckily, we do have roadside service and we were able to get the car towed home safely.

My automatic reaction, probably anyone's reaction, is to be upset.

Absolutely Furious

After two weeks of excruciating migraines I went to the doctor today. I've had migraines since I was four (Yes, I know it's outrageous!) that come in bouts, sometimes they're gone for several months and then they come back for a few debilitating weeks or months. Because I had been managing since Meghan was born and they hit me out of nowhere, it was time to be seen.

Blessed

I mentioned in my last post that I was hoping to get a recumbent bike to help me exercise at home. Well I have one! *This is where you should picture me jumping up and down excitedly*

Learning

I've been undergoing a process of relearning how to live. Then again, maybe I never knew fully how to live to begin with. Surviving through a life of one tragedy to next, how can normalcy exist?

Anyhow, I'm learning many new things, not all easy but all are important to me and the life that I wish to lead.

For My Meghan...

I thought it was about time that Meghan got her own space on the web. There's so much I want to remember, so many cute things to share. I thought I'd share that link here for any who are interested. :)

Acceptance

Turn on your tv, your computer, you radio or just walk out your front door and you'll hear. The world is crying out in unison, "Accept me. Love me for who I am. Take me as I am."

No matter what issues you're facing right now, everyone is craving that acceptance. Let me tell you a secret...

Is this hope?

I've talked about having Fibromyalgia in the past, I was diagnosed at 16 so it's not like it's news. It's also no secret that having a chronic pain condition sucks...big time.

Since I was 13 or so, I've had difficulty sleeping. The doctors just always said it was because of the Fibro and fed me more sleeping pills, pain pills, anti-depressants and herbal remedy pills. Somewhere around that same time, I had a chiropractor do x-rays who announced that my rib cage was underdeveloped. My primary said there wasn't anything to do about it and that was the end of it. On top of my sleep troubles I developed asthma, got sick easily (having a bad case of mono had me out of school for almost 8 weeks in the 6th grade), and battles of bronchitis often sent me to the hospital gasping for breath.

The doctors just always gave me pills and sent me on my way, never questioning, never searching for answers.

Seize The Day

Following my melt down surrounding Meghan's 2nd birthday, some switch flipped on. It was like I realized, perhaps finally, that there was absolutely nothing I could do to bring back my son, Max. But while I was fighting myself (and reality) so hard, I was missing out on this beautiful two year old girl.

I'm not Proud, But I am Human.

I survived.

April 1st came and went. I stayed so busy, I was almost able to forget my fears from the day.

April 1st

I've been stressing a lot lately over the first. It's going to be an emotional, crazy, hard day.

April 1st is...
1 year anniversary of my father's death.
5 days before Meghan's birthday (Max died 5 days before his)
Robert's sister, Melanie, arrives from Philly to stay for a week
Our Playgroup's annual Easter party

Did I say I'm stressed?

How do I tell her?

After my last post, Meghan came walking through the living room carrying the picture Daddy made us for Christmas. It's a picture frame that holds a picture of Max, one of Meghan and the two of them together. Meghan climbed onto the couch next to me pointed at each picture. She pointed to herself, a picture of her right after her first birthday, and said Meghan. Then for each of the three other pictures she pointed and said Max. She recognizes him in pictures now, even ones she hasn't seen before. She knows that he's different then other babies and children we see on the computer, tv or real life. She knows her brother.

How I Cope...

I've been thinking a lot about coping skills vs strength lately. I understand that many think I am strong for having dealt and survived so many difficult things in my life. Some of the things I've survived have been enough that some people wouldn't have been able to live through or maybe they would but just have an extremely altered life. Some would turn to drugs or start drinking. But yet I continue to survive time after time. I'm not saying I'm not screwed up, I know I need every minute of the therapy I receive. Yet despite all of it I continue to get out of bed each day, I care for my child, I get dressed, I eat...I do all the same things any other mother does.

Just Another Love Story

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there lived a young girl. A girl who was much too young for love and did not fully understand the impact other people could leave on her very impressionable soul. She met a boy who had the same name as a very famous country singer and when he asked her to be his girlfriend, she agreed. For eight months they had a relationship of sorts. The girl did not understand how she was supposed to be treated. So when the boy treated her badly, she didn't know any different. When he told her she was ugly and that no one would ever love her, she believed him. He told her to forget her dreams because they would never ever come true. He told her that her body disgusted him. For eight months she allowed herself to listen to the nasty things he had to say to her. She only began to fight back when he placed his hands around her throat until she couldn't breathe. Finally he released his grip and she realized then she needed to get away. And finally she did.

Fears

As I put Meghan down for her nap, she looks up at me with that big smile and those bright eyes and I feel my heart shatter into a million pieces. I feel the weight of it crashing over me. I love this child. I need this child. Meghan is my safety net, catching me when I fall and saving me from my own demise. Despite my efforts to hold myself back, I am attached to her. She is her brother's equal in my heart.

I wish...

I'm feeling low and gloomy today. I miss Max.
